Major airports expect surge in passengers during New Year holiday

VOV.VN - Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports are bracing for an anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the four-day New Year 2026 holiday, with many plans devised to minimize congestion and ensure flight safety.

From December 31, 2025 to January 4, 2026, Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi anticipates a 5–10% increase in passenger volume compared to regular days. The peak day, January 4, 2026, is expected to handle 115,000 passengers and 650 flights, representing 12.5% and 9% increases compared to the regular winter 2025 schedule.

International passenger traffic may reach 50,000, the highest ever, across 330 flights; domestic passengers around 65,000, 320 flights, up nearly 15% from typical days.

To meet the increasing travel demand, Terminal 2 has been upgraded, with additional check-in counters, self-service kiosks, and automated baggage systems. The airport applies the A-CDM decision-making model, contactless toll collection, maximizes security screening equipment during peak hours, and enhances technology support such as automated announcements and flight information services.

Passengers are advised to check in online, or arrive 3 hours before departure for international flights and 2 hours before departure for domestic flights, and prioritize using public transportation to reduce congestion on parking areas.

Meanwhile, Tan Son Nhat International Airport is anticipated to handle 131,000 passengers during four-day holiday, up 17% compared to the same period last year. The airport is set to serve 760 flights, including 450 domestic and 310 international flights, each day.

The peak days are January 1 and 4, 2026, with about 786 flights and 135,000 passengers per day, mainly on domestic routes.

Domestic flights from Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vasco, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines, and Sun PhuQuoc Airways have been relocated to Terminal 3, while VietJet Air continues at Terminal 1. Flight information displays are synchronized across terminals to prevent passenger confusion.
