VOV.VN - A tourist train linking Phong Nha and Hue – two of central Vietnam's best-known destinations for natural, cultural and historical heritage – is expected to begin operations on September 1.
The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Tri province announced on July 12 that the provincial People's Committee has assigned the department to coordinate with Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) in developing and implementing the tourist rail service between Phong Nha and Hue.
According to VNR, the train will consist of seven specially designed carriages offering an immersive travel experience. Onboard facilities will include displays showcasing regional culture, an exhibition area for One Commune One Product (OCOP) specialties, local cuisine and traditional art performances.
The approximately 190-kilometre route will pass through Hue, Dong Ha, My Trach, Dong Hoi and Tho Loc railway stations, with an estimated journey time of around four and a half hours. Ticket prices are expected to start at VND360,000 (about US$14) per passenger.
Phong Nha is renowned for its spectacular cave system in Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, is home to the Complex of Hue Monuments, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, attracting large numbers of domestic and international visitors each year.
VNR expects the new service to offer travellers a unique journey combining nature, heritage, culture and local cuisine along Vietnam's central region.
French newspapers Le Figaro and Ouest-France have recently published features introducing SJourney, a luxury rail tourism service offering a trans-Vietnam travel experience.
Hanoi’s Department of Tourism (DoT) has called on travel firms to take the initiative in developing tour packages that incorporate rail travel, particularly seasonal and event-based experiences, for both domestic and international visitors.
