VOV.VN - Vietnam Railways transported nearly 3.9 million passengers in the first half of 2026, up 5.2% year on year, driven by flexible operations, diversified services and the expansion of tourism trains and charter services.
Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) attributed the growth to flexible transport planning during peak travel periods, including the Lunar New Year, public holidays and the summer season. It also introduced new services and products to better meet travel demand and enhance the passenger experience.
Several routes also recorded robust revenue growth, led by the Hanoi–Lao Cai line at 27%, followed by the Hanoi–Da Nang SE19/20 service and the Hanoi–Hai Phong route, both posting increases of more than 12% each year on year.
One of the highlights was the “Central Heritage Connection” tourism train operating between Hue and Da Nang, which was launched in March 2026. According to VNR, passenger traffic on the service increased by 11%, while revenue surged by 41%.
Charter train services also delivered positive results. In the first half of the year, VNR operated 13 charter trips, carrying more than 5,400 passengers and generating over VND16 billion (approximately US$465,000) in revenue.
In the coming time, VNR plans to continue expanding passenger transport revenue by developing more tourism trains, charter services, themed trains and short-distance routes. The corporation also aims to strengthen links between rail transport and tourism, accommodation and sightseeing services.
The strategy is intended to diversify railway services, improve the attractiveness of rail travel and better meet the evolving needs of passengers.
