VOV.VN - The fourth Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF IV) opened in Da Nang on June 28, highlighting the city’s growing role as an international cinematic hub while creating new opportunities for Vietnamese cinema to deepen collaboration with regional and global film industries.
Running from June 28 to July 4, this year’s festival themed Bridging Asia to the World features 13 Asian films and 11 Vietnamese productions competing in the official competition, alongside 21 titles in the Panorama of Asian Cinema section and 26 films showcased under the Vietnamese Cinema Today programme.
Beyond film screenings, DANAFF IV also hosts a series of international conferences, masterclasses, artist meet-and-greet sessions and networking events aimed at fostering global collaboration within the film industry.
Opening the festival, Da Nang Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Anh Thi said the city is striving to become not only a leading tourist destination but also a regional hub for culture, creativity and the creative industries.
She described cinema as playing a central role in that vision by promoting cultural values, stimulating the creative economy and enhancing the city's international appeal.
According to Thi, DANAFF has evolved beyond an annual film festival into a platform where filmmakers, producers, distributors, industry experts and audiences come together to exchange ideas, forge partnerships and contribute to the sustainable development of cinema.
Through DANAFF IV, Da Nang will continue strengthening its position as a destination for cultural, artistic and cinematic events while contributing to the deeper integration of Vietnamese cinema into the regional and global film landscape, she stressed.
After three successful editions under the theme "The Asian Bridge," this year's festival expands its vision with "Bridging Asia to the World," reflecting its ambition to bring Asian cinema to wider international audiences.
Ngo Phuong Lan, chairwoman of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion and Development of Cinema, said Asian cinema continues to strengthen its presence on the global stage, demonstrating that stories rooted in local cultures can resonate through universal human values.
She expressed hope that DANAFF would continue serving as a creative platform where filmmakers discover new partners, launch collaborative projects and create fresh opportunities for both Vietnamese and Asian cinema.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra praised DANAFF's remarkable progress over just four editions, saying the festival has steadily established itself as an important bridge connecting Vietnamese cinema with the wider Asian film community.
She said the festival's development reflects Vietnam's consistent policy of recogniding culture as a source of national identity, soft power and sustainable development.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, cinema is not only an art form but also a high-value creative industry capable of promoting Vietnam's image internationally while generating new economic opportunities.
She called on the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Da Nang authorities to continue improving policies that support the development of a vibrant film ecosystem closely linked with culture, tourism and the creative industries, while elevating DANAFF into one of Asia's leading film festivals.
“The Government will continue supporting creative ideas, helping valuable works reach wider audiences, and nurturing talented filmmakers. From Da Nang, DANAFF will continue connecting Vietnamese cultural values with the world, inspiring creativity and bringing Vietnamese cinema to greater international recognition,” she said.
DANAFF IV will feature three international conferences focusing on Vietnamese cinema in the era of renewal, the application of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies and intellectual property protection in filmmaking, and the development model of the U.S. film industry.
The festival also offers free indoor and outdoor film screenings, a DANAFF exhibition area at APEC Park, and a wide range of cultural exchange activities for international delegates and visitors.
With its expanding international profile and the participation of prominent figures from the global film industry, DANAFF IV is expected to strengthen its role as a platform for creative exchange, helping Vietnamese cinema build stronger international partnerships and reach wider global audiences.
