VOV.VN - The central city of Da Nang is finalising its master plan through 2050, with a vision to 2075- a long-term strategic blueprint to shape the city’s development over the coming decades and transform it into a livable coastal city that is innovative, multi-centred and globally connected.
At a consultation conference on the draft master plan held on June 18, experts and researchers said clearer targets are needed to help turn Da Nang into one of Vietnam’s three key growth poles, while enhancing its role as an internationally competitive urban centre and a major hub within regional and global urban networks.
Many participants proposed that Da Nang should pursue the model of a “super coastal metropolis”, a heritage, innovation and high-end eco-tourism urban hub with regional standing in Asia, capitalising on its strengths in the marine economy, logistics, deep-water ports and coastal tourism.
Experts also stressed that the master plan should be consistent with the two-tier local government model and the city’s expanded development space, ensuring stronger regional connectivity and more coordinated urban development in the long term.
This is particularly important as it will directly affect investment planning, decentralisation and implementation.
Under the proposed framework, Da Nang’s population is projected to reach around 6 million by 2050. However, experts said population size alone is not the sole measure of a special-status city.
Instead, Da Nang is better defined by criteria such as quality of life, international competitiveness, smart governance, ecological development and cultural preservation, helping maintain its reputation as one of Vietnam’s most livable cities.
Despite its advantages, Da Nang continues to face major challenges related to transport infrastructure, flood prevention, climate adaptation and sustainable development. As a coastal city, it is particularly vulnerable to storms, flooding and saltwater intrusion.
According to planning consultants, the resources required to implement the master plan are substantial, with total investment estimated at around US$350 billion for strategic infrastructure, urban development, industry, logistics, trade, services and related sectors.
Municipal authorities said feedback from the consultation conference will be further reviewed and incorporated before the master plan is submitted for appraisal and approval in the time to come.
Nearly 500 policymakers, experts, business representatives and investors gathered at the Da Nang Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and Investment Connectivity 2026 Conference on June 13 to discuss development strategies for Vietnam’s first free trade zone and explore investment opportunities.
