Indonesia offers growing opportunities for Vietnam’s food industry

VOV.VN - Indonesia is emerging as one of the most promising markets for Vietnam's food industry thanks to its large consumer base, rapidly expanding middle class and growing demand for processed, convenient and health-oriented food products.

The view was shared by experts and businesses at a seminar titled “Indonesia’s Market Trends: Opportunities for Vietnamese Food Enterprises,”, jointly organised by the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC) and the Consulate General of Indonesia in Ho Chi Minh City on June 24.

According to experts, Indonesia's population of more than 280 million makes it an attractive destination for Vietnamese food exporters. Consumers in the country are increasingly seeking natural, health-conscious products that align with modern consumption trends.

Le Anh Hoang, deputy director of ITPC, said Vietnam and Indonesia possess favourable conditions for expanding trade cooperation. Both countries are members of ASEAN, participate in multiple regional trade agreements and elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025.

Hoang noted that economic and trade relations between the two countries have continued to develop positively in recent years, with bilateral trade maintaining steady growth.

"The increasingly close cooperation between the business communities of Vietnam and Indonesia is creating new opportunities for partnership and laying the foundation for stronger and more sustainable trade development in the future," he stressed.

Citing data from the Vietnam Trade Office in Indonesia, experts said the country's food and beverage (F&B) industry is projected to generate more than US$360 billion in revenue by 2026. This presents significant opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products, processed foods and beverages to expand their market presence.

Indonesia is also one of the world’s largest Halal markets, valued at approximately US$155.3 billion and accounting for 11.1% of the global Halal food market. As a result, Halal certification is not only a regulatory requirement but also a key competitive advantage for Vietnamese businesses seeking to enter and grow in the market.
