Passion fruit leads record US$ 343 million agricultural exports to EU in 7 months

VOV.VN - Vietnam's seven-month fruit and vegetable exports to the European Union reached a record US$ 343.3, recording an average annual growth rate of 29.4% since 2022 and accounting for 7.2% of the country's total fruit and vegetable export turnover.

Passion fruit cemented its position as the top revenue contributor, generating over US$ 116 million, representing between 31.89% and 33.85% of total export value to the EU with a 40% average growth rate over the 2022-2026 period.

Other key items included mangoes at nearly US$ 41.2 million and coconuts at nearly US$ 35.7 million, with average growth rates of 34.4% and 51.3% respectively, while strawberries emerged as a growing niche product at US$ 4.8 million.

The Netherlands remained the primary distribution gateway at US$ 134.8 million (39.27% market share), serving as the main logistics hub for onward distribution to Germany, Belgium, France, and Nordic countries. Germany followed at over US$ 68.9 million, reflecting soaring demand for tropical fruits, bottled juices, and processed vegetables.

Meanwhile, imports by France reached US$ 36.36 million, boosted by demand for fresh tropical fruits. Belgium accounted for over US$ 10 million, complementing the Netherlands in regional logistics.

Nguyen Van Muoi, Deputy Secretary-General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, noted that the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) provides significant tariff advantages over competitors from South America and Africa.

Investments in preservation technologies and deep processing have also minimized long-distance shipping pressures. However, exporters face dual hurdles: stricter maximum residue limits (MRLs) on agricultural imports, particularly for dragon fruit, and strict traceability and accountability mandates under the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). To sustain market expansion, enterprises must upgrade supply chain standards, enhance quality control, and maintain rigorous traceability documentation.
