VOV.VN - The Phu Quoc Special Zone has completed three key power projects with total investment of around VND2.165 trillion, raising the island’s power supply capacity to 500 MVA and strengthening its infrastructure ahead of the 2027 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.
The three projects are the 220kV Phu Quoc Substation, the 110kV Phu Quoc-Nam Phu Quoc Transmission Line and the 110kV Phu Quoc-Bac Phu Quoc Transmission Line.
The two transmission lines were energised on August 16 and August 28, respectively, while the 220kV substation was completed and put into operation on August 19.
Their completion within a short period has significantly strengthened power transmission and supply capacity across the island as Phu Quoc enters a new phase of development and electricity demand continues to rise.
The 220kV Phu Quoc Substation is the central component of the projects and is expected to play an important role in upgrading the island’s power transmission system.
With the substation now in operation, the Kien Binh-Phu Quoc transmission line can fully operate at 220kV, after previously running at 110kV. The combined power supply capacity for Phu Quoc has therefore increased to around 500 MVA.
Nguyen Ngoc Thong, deputy director of the Southern Power Project Management Board, said the upgraded system provides an important foundation for meeting Phu Quoc’s electricity needs in the years ahead.
“The new infrastructure will give the island greater flexibility in securing power supplies, meeting current demand and creating room for development through 2035,” he told VOV.
The operation of the upgraded system is particularly important as tourism, services, urban development and infrastructure continue to expand on the island, increasing electricity demand from businesses, production facilities and households.
The projects were developed under challenging conditions, including land clearance, island weather and the transportation of heavy equipment from the mainland to Phu Quoc.
To accelerate construction, project teams took advantage of favourable weather windows and used drones in transmission-line construction.
The aircraft were used to pull pilot wires across difficult terrain, including forested areas, replacing part of the manual pulling process previously used.
Construction units said drone deployment helped shorten construction time and improve efficiency at hard-to-reach locations.
Nguyen Tai Anh, deputy general director of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), praised the efforts of project owners, contractors, consultants and local authorities in speeding up construction.
“All projects designed to strengthen Phu Quoc’s power supply are expected to be completed more than a year ahead of schedule, leaving additional time for testing, commissioning and preparations to ensure stable electricity supplies,” he said.
This is particularly significant as APEC Economic Leaders’ Week will be held on Phu Quoc Island in November 2027, with numerous activities taking place across the island.
However, the projects are not intended solely for the event. Strengthening the island’s power system is expected to provide a long-term infrastructure base for investment, tourism and broader economic development.
The three projects add an important new layer to Phu Quoc’s infrastructure as the island moves toward a development model requiring stronger tourism, services, technology and urban infrastructure.
With total investment of around VND2.165 trillion, the projects not only increase electricity supply capacity but also improve system reliability, strengthen links between different parts of the island and create additional capacity for future demand.
Stable electricity is one of the basic conditions for businesses to invest with confidence, expand operations and develop new services.
This is why the completion of the projects has significance beyond that of a standalone infrastructure investment. With core physical infrastructure in place, Phu Quoc will have a stronger foundation for expanding digital services, high-quality tourism and an increasingly sophisticated investment ecosystem.
The completion of the three power projects in August therefore addresses immediate electricity needs while also preparing Phu Quoc for a broader phase of development, strengthening its investment appeal and helping the island meet the rising infrastructure demands associated with hosting APEC 2027.
