VOV.VN - The 9th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union for the 2026–2031 term has concluded successfully with the participation of 599 delegates, marking a new development phase focused on green agriculture, professional farmers and comprehensive digital transformation.
More than an organisational event, the congress, held in Hanoi on June 7-8, was seen as an important shift in development thinking, placing greater emphasis on agricultural value chains, science and technology applications, and the enhanced role of farmers in Vietnam’s modern economy.
Addressing the congress, Politburo member and Permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu underscored the need to fundamentally reform methods of supporting farmers in a more practical manner linked directly to production efficiency and livelihoods.
He emphasised the importance of developing concrete agricultural economic models that connect farmers with cooperatives and businesses, while accelerating digital transformation, green agriculture and standardised production chains to meet both domestic and international market requirements.
According to him, “a key objective is to build a modern and professional farming workforce capable of mastering production processes and participating more deeply in modern agricultural value chains”.
At the congress, Luong Quoc Doan was re-elected as President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union for the new term.
“The upcoming term would focus on addressing bottlenecks in the production–processing–distribution chain, which remains one of the weakest areas in Vietnam’s agricultural sector,” he stressed.
Doan highlighted the importance of strengthening the union’s role as a bridge between farmers, cooperatives and enterprises, promoting the “four-party linkage” model involving the State, scientists, businesses and farmers to create sustainable agricultural value chains and improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products.
At the local level, many delegates said the new policies would create more favourable conditions for farmers to expand production, access markets and increase the value of agricultural products, particularly as export standards and quality requirements become increasingly demanding.
Representing the business community, Huynh Van Thon, chairman of Loc Troi group, agreed that the congress demonstrated a clear transition from policy thinking to practical action, with concrete and feasible solutions for real-world agricultural production.
“One of the most notable aspects was the focus on solving bottlenecks in agricultural processing and market connectivity, which are considered critical challenges for the sector,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bui Thi Thom, vice president of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union Executive Committee, emphasised expectations for a new generation of farmers capable of international integration and technology adoption.
“Farmers in the new era must not only possess production skills but also become true economic actors with market-oriented thinking and the ability to apply science and technology effectively,” she noted.
At the conclusion of the congress, the newly elected executive committee set several key targets for the 2026–2031 period, including recruiting an additional 500,000 members, supporting the establishment of at least 5,000 agricultural enterprises and ensuring that at least 70% of union members receive digital skills training.
These goals are expected to lay the foundation for a stronger transformation of Vietnam’s agricultural sector toward a greener, more modern, sustainable and globally integrated development model.
