VOV.VN - Vietnam and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence cooperation in a more practical and effective manner across areas such as training, defense industry, cybersecurity, military medicine, United Nations peacekeeping operations and post-war recovery efforts.
The agreement was highlighted during a meeting between General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defence Forces, in Hanoi on June 2.
Gen. Giang, who is also a Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister, welcomed the outcomes of earlier talks between the two delegations and expressed confidence that Gen. Hiroaki’s visit would help strengthen mutual trust and understanding between the two defence ministries.
He said the visit would also create new momentum for bilateral defence ties in the coming years.
Vietnam highly values its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World with Japan, he told his guest.
According to the minister, bilateral relations have continued to develop positively across multiple sectors, with Japan remaining one of Vietnam’s leading economic partners and maintaining extensive cooperation in investment, trade, labor and people-to-people exchanges.
He noted that alongside broader bilateral ties, defence cooperation between the two countries has expanded steadily and become increasingly substantive.
Japan is currently one of the few countries maintaining a full range of defence dialogue and consultation mechanisms with Vietnam at multiple levels.
The minister also praised Japan’s support for Vietnam in areas including human resource training, defence industry development, technology transfer and war legacy remediation.
He proposed that both sides continue effectively implementing existing cooperation agreements, with priorities to be given to maintaining dialogue mechanisms, strengthening cooperation between military services, expanding training programmes, enhancing military medical cooperation, cybersecurity collaboration and participation in United Nations peacekeeping activities.
The Vietnamese Defence Minister also expressed hope that Japan would continue supporting high-quality personnel training for Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence, particularly in science, engineering and technology, while expanding scholarship opportunities for Vietnamese military officers.
Gen. Giang invited leaders of Japan’s Ministry of Defence, the Japan Self-Defence Forces and Japanese defence industry companies to attend the third Vietnam International Defence Expo scheduled for December 2026.
For his part, Gen. Hiroaki voiced Japan’s commitment to strengthening relations with Vietnam. He expressed Japan’s desire to further deepen bilateral defence cooperation in areas such as delegation exchanges, training, cybersecurity, military medicine and cooperation between armed forces.

Vietnam and Japan held their first Foreign and Defence Vice-Ministerial Consultation in Tokyo on December 4, engaging in frank and open discussions on diplomatic and security ties as well as broader global and regional developments.
