Party General Secretary and State President To Lam begins Australia visit

The top Vietnamese leader is being accompanied by Politburo members Bui Thi Minh Hoai, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee; Trinh Van Quyet, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Communications and Education; General Phan Van Giang, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence; General Luong Tam Quang, Minister of Public Security; and Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung, along with leaders of several Party and State agencies, ministries, sectors, localities and related agencies.

This is the Party General Secretary and State President’s first visit to Australia in his current capacity. It is also the first visit by Vietnam’s top leader to Australia since Vietnam upgraded its relations with Australia to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships in 2024.

The visit comes following the successful 14th National Party Congress and the completion of the leadership arrangements for the new term, giving them particular significance in the implementation of the foreign policy orientations set out by the 14th National Party Congress.

The visit reaffirms Vietnam’s importance attached to Australia as an important partner in the South Pacific, while demonstrating Vietnam’s determination to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships and make it more substantive, effective and sustainable.

According to the agenda, the Vietnamese leader will hold talks and meetings with senior Australian leaders to further strengthen high-level political trust, exchange views on major orientations for bilateral relations and identify cooperation priorities for the years ahead.

Alongside political and diplomatic issues, the visit also aims to promote cooperation in areas with significant potential, including the economy, trade, investment, science and technology, innovation, education and training, digital transformation, the green transition and high-quality human resource development.

They will also hold extensive discussions on regional and international issues of shared concern and strengthen coordination through multilateral mechanisms, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development in the region and around the world.

The top Vietnamese leader's state visit to Australia is expected to give fresh impetus to bilateral relations, helping deepen and strengthen ties in a more substantive and effective manner in the new period.

After Australia, Party General Secretary and State President will pay a state visit to New Zealand from August 12-14 at the invitation of New Zealand Governor-General Cindy Kiro.
