VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 15 called for stronger economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia, including faster infrastructure connectivity and expanded border trade, during a meeting with outgoing Cambodian Ambassador Chea Kimtha.
At the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated Cambodia on its important achievements and expressed confidence that the country would continue to maintain peace, stability and prosperity.
Emphasizing the strategic significance of the traditional solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as among Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, the PM noted that amid complex regional and global developments, the long-standing friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries constitute a solid foundation for jointly safeguarding peace and stability, building independent and self-reliant economies, and promoting sustainable development.
Regarding economic cooperation, the Prime Minister proposed that the two sides accelerate infrastructure connectivity, particularly border trade infrastructure development.
Vietnam wishes to step up trade cooperation with Cambodia, especially in key products such as rice, cashew nuts and rubber, in order to promote processing industries and import-export activities, enhance border and border-gate connectivity, and work toward achieving a bilateral trade turnover of US$20 billion in the near future, said the leader.
He also called on Cambodia to further facilitate Vietnamese enterprises’ investment and business activities in Cambodia.
Highly appreciating Ambassador Kimtha’s active contributions to promoting cooperation among ministries, sectors and localities, as well as people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, the Prime Minister expressed his belief that she would continue to make positive contributions to bilateral relations in any future position.
For her part, Ambassador Kimtha thanked the Vietnamese government for its support during her tenure and praised Vietnam’s recent economic reforms and administrative streamlining. She expressed confidence that Vietnam would achieve its long-term development goals following the upcoming 14th National Congress of the Communist Party.
Both sides noted with satisfaction that Vietnam–Cambodia relations have continued to develop positively across all fields. Political and diplomatic relations have been strengthened through frequent exchanges of delegations at all levels; defence and security cooperation remains a pillar; economic cooperation stands out with strong growth in bilateral trade; and cooperation in education and training, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges has been actively enhanced.
PM Chinh suggested that the two sides continue close coordination in land border demarcation and marker planting, as well as border management. He also thanked Cambodia and called for continued support and facilitation regarding the legal status, including citizenship, of people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia, enabling them to stabilise their lives and contribute positively to Cambodia’s development and bilateral friendship.
