Parliamentary diplomacy drives closer Vietnam-Australia ties
VOV.VN - Parliamentary diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges are set to play a greater role in deepening the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Australia have highlighted broad political support as a foundation for their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both sides seeking to expand cooperation in energy, technology, investment and resilient supply chains.
The view was shared during a meeting in Canberra on August 11 between Angus Taylor, leader of the Opposition and leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, and Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam who is on a state visit to Australia from August 9-12.
At the meeting, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam regards Australia as an important and trusted Comprehensive Strategic Partner, expressing his appreciation for the strong development of bilateral ties.
He stressed that the progress achieved in bilateral relations has been nurtured by successive generations of leaders, together with broad support across Australia's political spectrum, providing a foundation for stable and long-term ties and contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in the region.
He said Vietnam is entering a new stage of development, with institutional reform, the private sector, science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, higher productivity and high-quality human resources identified as key growth drivers.
Against this backdrop, Vietnam hopes Australia, with its strengths in capital, technology, education and training, and natural resources, will continue to be an important partner in developing these new drivers of growth, he said.
The top Vietnamese leader called for stronger exchanges between political parties, as well as greater interaction between the two parliaments and their lawmakers.
He also proposed that the two countries move beyond traditional trade links toward jointly developing safe, sustainable and resilient supply and value chains, particularly in energy and critical minerals.
He requested that Australia continue ensuring supplies of coal and liquefied natural gas, while expanding cooperation in clean energy and the green transition.
The Vietnamese leader held that the two countries have favourable conditions to lift economic ties to a new level by jointly developing capabilities, technologies and value.
He also encouraged Australian businesses and investment funds to increase investment in areas where Vietnam has demand and Australia has strengths, such as clean energy, smart agriculture, infrastructure, minerals, high technology and the marine economy.
At the same time, he called on Australia to facilitate Vietnamese businesses' investment and operations in Australia, helping promote more balanced and effective two-way investment.
For his part, Taylor affirmed that the Liberal Party of Australia attaches importance to relations with Vietnam, saying the positive political foundation between the two countries provides favourable conditions for shifting toward concrete and long-term economic interests and development opportunities.
He stressed that Australia’s commitment to relations with Vietnam would remain regardless of which political party is in government.
Taylor praised Vietnam's proactive steps in reform and international integration, noting that bilateral ties are increasingly supported by a broader range of stakeholders beyond the two governments, including political parties, parliamentarians, businesses, and educational and research institutions.
He affirmed the Liberal Party's strong support for translating bilateral commitments into concrete cooperation, and encouraging Australian businesses to take a more proactive approach to opportunities in Vietnam.
Vietnam, he said, is not only an important market for Australia but also a partner with significant potential for jointly developing production capacity, technology and future industries.
