VOV.VN - President Luong Cuong’s working trip to the United States from September 21 to 24 is of special significance, as it is not only an opportunity for Vietnam to demonstrate its respect for the United Nations, but also to forge bilateral relations with the United States, a comprehensive strategic partner of Vietnam.
Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Dung was speaking in an interview granted to Washington-based VOV correspondents ahead of President Cuong’s departure for New York to attend the 2025 High-level General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA-80) and engage in a series of bilateral activities in the United States.
This marks President Cuong’s first visit to the United States in his capacity as Head of State, and it is expected to open new prospects for bilateral cooperation, according to the Ambassador.
Ambassador Dung emphasised that Vietnam's presence at the UN underscores its commitment to multilateralism and highlights its role as a responsible and active member of the international community. The visit provides a platform for Vietnam to present its perspectives, share development experiences, and contribute initiatives on global challenges such as peace, stability, sustainable development, and climate change.
Beyond multilateral engagement, the trip coincides with the 30th anniversary of Vietnam–US diplomatic normalisation and the second anniversary of the establishment of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. Ambassador Dung stressed that this milestone reflects both countries’ determination to enhance cooperation across politics, economy, technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Reflecting on achievements since the partnership upgrade, the Ambassador noted that bilateral ties have been significantly consolidated. Both sides have maintained frequent high-level exchanges, including four recent phone calls between General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump. On economy, two-way trade continues to expand, with the US remaining Vietnam’s largest export market. US corporations in technology, energy, and logistics are increasingly interested in Vietnam, while more Vietnamese businesses are exploring opportunities in the US. At the same time, cultural, educational, and people-to-people exchanges have flourished, laying a strong social foundation for bilateral relations.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung identified three key areas of potential cooperation, namely economic and technological collaboration, cultural and tourism exchanges, and education and training. Vietnam is prioritising green growth and digital transformation, while the US seeks to diversify its supply chains, creating opportunities in high technology, clean energy, and sustainable development.
In the cultural sphere, America’s 250th Independence anniversary in 2026 will offer a valuable occasion for meaningful joint activities. In education, deeper linkages with the US will help Vietnam enhance the quality of its human resources while promoting mutual understanding between the two peoples.
The Ambassador also highlighted the vital role of the Vietnamese community in the US, which has grown stronger and achieved success in various fields, particularly science and technology. With enduring ties to their homeland, this community serves as a cultural and economic bridge and contributes actively to fostering Vietnam–US relations.
