VOV.VN - Vietnam is stepping up preparations for hosting APEC 2027 by enhancing communication skills and developing a comprehensive outreach strategy to effectively promote the forum’s vision, priorities and achievements to domestic and international audiences.
A workshop on communication skills for APEC Vietnam 2027 opened in Hanoi on June 18, bringing together officials, communication experts and representatives of relevant agencies to discuss ways to improve public engagement and communication effectiveness in the lead-up to the event.
The two-day workshop focuses on developing communication strategies that can help the public better understand the role of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and its contributions to regional growth, economic recovery and prosperity.
Speaking at the opening session, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang, head of the APEC Communications and Culture Subcommittee, noted that the global landscape has changed significantly since Vietnam last hosted APEC in 2017. Despite growing uncertainties and rapid transformations worldwide, APEC continues to serve as the leading economic cooperation forum in the Asia-Pacific region, promoting growth, innovation, connectivity and prosperity.
According to the Deputy Minister, hosting APEC 2027 is both an important responsibility and a valuable opportunity for Vietnam to showcase itself as an open, dynamic and deeply integrated economy. As the host economy, Vietnam aims to bring APEC closer to the public and help both domestic and international audiences better understand the forum’s practical contributions to socio-economic development.
Hang emphasised effective communication will help tell three interconnected stories - the story of APEC, the story of Vietnam, and the story of cooperation, partnership and friendship.
She said APEC 2027 would provide Vietnam with an opportunity to present a new chapter of the country's development story, highlighting its aspirations, transformation, resilience and confidence in the future.
According to the communication framework discussed at the workshop, outreach efforts for APEC 2027 will be implemented in multiple phases and guided by three key objectives: raising public awareness of APEC, promoting Vietnam’s image, and highlighting the country’s contributions during its 30 years of participation in the APEC process, as well as the priorities it will advance as host economy in 2027.
Communication messages will be designed to be clear, consistent and tailored to different audiences, including policymakers, experts, businesses and the general public.
Fernando Salas, director of Communications and Public Affairs at the APEC Secretariat, shared the forum is advancing initiatives aimed at facilitating trade and investment, accelerating digital transformation, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and promoting innovation and sustainable, inclusive growth.
Drawing on experiences from previous APEC host economies, he noted that an effective communication strategy plays a critical role in making APEC’s policies and discussions more accessible and relevant to the public.
As many of the issues APEC addresses are highly technical and complex, he said, journalists’ role is to translate those discussions into clear, understandable and meaningful messages for different audiences, including businesses, policymakers and society as a whole.
During the workshop, participants are discussing a range of topics, including building communication teams, identifying communication priorities for the host economy, implementing digital communication strategies, managing the APEC brand and image, and sharing best practices from previous APEC hosts.
The event is expected to strengthen Vietnam’s preparedness, enhance coordination among stakeholders and support efforts to effectively communicate the vision, priorities and achievements of APEC Vietnam 2027, contributing to the overall success of the forum.
