VOV.VN - Vietnam has called on ASEAN to strengthen direct engagement with Myanmar to help advance the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.
Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung made the proposal at an informal meeting between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Myanmar's foreign minister in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 12.
Addressing the meeting, Trung reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent position that Myanmar í an integral member of ASEAN and that the Five-Point Consensus continues to serve as the primary framework for supporting efforts to restore peace and stability in the country.
He stressed that ASEAN should take more practical and concrete steps to improve implementation of the consensus, with priority given to maintaining regular channels of direct dialogue and engagement with Myanmar to better assess developments on the ground and promote tangible progress.
He also acknowledged the Myanmar authorities' recent efforts to stabilise the political situation, revive the economy, strengthen border management and combat transnational crimes, including drug trafficking and cybercrime.
Reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to supporting Myanmar alongside other ASEAN members, the minister said Vietnam stands ready to work closely with the ASEAN Chair in 2026 and fellow member states to assist Myanmar's economic recovery, address social issues, expand bilateral and subregional cooperation, and contribute to building a united, resilient and sustainable ASEAN Community.
At the meeting, Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe briefed his ASEAN counterparts on recent developments, including the country's 100-day action plan, measures to promote peace and stability, and ongoing engagement with relevant stakeholders.
In a frank and constructive exchange, ASEAN foreign ministers discussed ways to enhance support for Myanmar in implementing the Five-Point Consensus. They also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining dialogue with Myanmar and supporting a Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led process toward a long-term solution.
The meeting, chaired by Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa P. Lazaro in her capacity as chair of ASEAN 2026, marked the first ministerial-level, face-to-face engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar since 2021, and the highest-level direct contact between the two sides during that period.
It was convened in line with directions issued by ASEAN leaders at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines, underscoring the bloc's commitment to maintaining ASEAN centrality, promoting dialogue and supporting the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Le Hoai Trung held separate bilateral talks with Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe and Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa P. Lazaro to discuss bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.
