VOV.VN - The 14th Vietnam Trade Union Congress for the 2026-2031 term opened in Hanoi on June 4, bringing together 780 delegates representing nearly 10 million trade union members nationwide.
Held at the National Convention Centre, the congress takes place as Vietnam enters a new development phase marked by rapid digital transformation, innovation-driven growth and efforts to improve labour productivity.
The event is considered a major political gathering for Vietnam’s working class and trade union system, while also serving as an important milestone in redefining the role of trade unions in the country’s next stage of development.
Under the theme “Solidarity - Democracy - Discipline - Innovation - Development,” delegates are reviewing the implementation of resolutions adopted during the 13th VGCL Congress for the 2023-2026 period and setting priorities and strategic goals for the new 2026-2031 term.
During the opening session, delegates heard reports on previous congress activities, reviewed a documentary highlighting recent trade union achievements and discussed political reports and recommendations submitted by workers and trade unions to the Party and State leadership.
A central focus of the new term is building a stronger and more modern Vietnam Trade Union system capable of better representing and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of workers while supporting national development goals.
The congress also emphasised the role of workers as a pioneering force in innovation, science and technology application and economic modernisation.
As technological change continues to reshape production models and labour markets globally, the congress identified several priorities for the coming years, including expanding union membership, improving organisational structures, enhancing the quality of union officials and promoting workplace democracy.
Delegates also discussed the expansion of welfare programmes for union members and improving labour productivity through innovation-oriented movements and skills development initiatives.
One of the most notable policy directions for the 2026-2031 term is encouraging workers to actively engage in innovation, adopt new technologies and participate in building new productive forces for the economy. These efforts are essential to meeting Vietnam’s long-term growth targets amid increasing global competition and technological transformation.
Delegates on June 4 are expected to discuss and approve personnel plans for the 14th Executive Committee, elect the new leadership and adopt revised amendments to the Vietnam Trade Union Charter.
Earlier, during the congress’s first working day on June 3, delegates elected a 27-member Presidium, a Secretariat and a committee responsible for verifying delegate qualifications.
The congress also reviewed amendments to the Vietnam Trade Union Charter and assessed the performance of the 13th Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.
Specialised discussions on June 3 focused on improving worker representation, strengthening trade union organisations, reforming union finances, enhancing communication and launching labour emulation movements linked to higher productivity and improved worker incomes.
The Ho Chi Minh City Federation of Labour has joined hands with Go Holding Group and Le Nguyen Filling and Construction Co., Ltd. to roll out a housing project aimed at delivering at least 5,000 homes for workers and labourers by 2030.
