Top leader calls for deeper research on socialism and Vietnam’s path to socialism

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam has called for deeper research on socialism, as well as Vietnam’s model of and path towards socialism in the context of global changes, particularly the building of socialist localities.

Chairing a working session with the Central Theoretical Council for the 2026-2031 term in Hanoi on June 9, the top leader laid stress on the importance of theoretical work to the country’s revolutionary cause.

The Central Theoretical Council is an important advisory body of the Communist Party of Vietnam on political theory. Over 30 years and six terms, the council has built a tradition of solidarity, democracy, a scientific approach, responsibility and innovation, while drawing many respected leaders, managers, scientists and experts.

It has contributed to theoretical and practical reviews, preparations for Party congress documents, the provision of arguments for the Party Central Committee, the Politburo and the Secretariat in policymaking, thus safeguarding the Party’s ideological foundation, and expanding theoretical exchanges with fraternal parties.

Applauding the council’s contributions during the 2021-2026 term, particularly in reviewing 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal), preparing documents for the 14th National Party Congress and providing advice and reports to the Politburo and the Secretariat, To Lam said the council had adopted new working methods since the beginning of the 2026-2031 term, closely in line with political tasks and promptly serving the Party Central Committee, the Politburo and the Secretariat.

He stressed that theoretical work holds a particularly important position because, to lead and govern effectively and fulfil its mission, the Party must have sound theory. To move forward, the Party needs long-term vision; to resolve new issues, it needs new thinking; and to maintain its strategic objectives, it must continue to develop the Party’s ideological foundation creatively on the basis of Vietnam’s practical experience while selectively absorbing the intellectual achievements of humanity.

According to To Lam, theoretical work in the 2026-2031 period must become more proactive and incisive. It should not merely follow developments to explain practice, but should move in parallel with, and in some cases ahead of, developments that require forecasting. It must focus on core issues, remove bottlenecks and emerging contradictions in development, and provide timely and effective advice for Party policymaking.

He asked the council to conduct deeper research on socialism, Vietnam’s model of and path towards socialism under changing global conditions, particularly issues related to the building of socialist localities, the transitional period and new factors emerging in practice.

“How can we make full use of the strengths of the market economy, unlock all private-sector resources, while maintaining the socialist orientation and preventing extreme wealth disparities? How can we build a development-oriented institution in the digital space, safeguard data sovereignty, and at the same time transform our nation into a technologically proficient, prosperous and equitable country?

“At the same time, deeper research is needed on new aspects of the socialist rule-of-law state, socialist democracy and the building of a new socialist Vietnamese person,”  he emphasized.

On the occasion, To Lam also called on Party bodies, ministries, sectors and localities to continue supporting the Central Theoretical Council in fulfilling its functions and tasks. He said reviewing practical experience, providing information and coordinating theoretical research should be regarded as a political responsibility, thereby contributing to the development of a modern Vietnamese revolutionary theory with a strong national identity in a new era of development.
