Top Vietnamese leader arrives in Canberra, continuing state visit to Australia

Those welcoming the top Vietnamese leader and his high-level delegation at Canberra Airport included Jeff Barnes representing the Australian Governor-General; Madeleine King representing the Australian Prime Minister and serving as Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia; Justin Hayhurst, deputy head of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet; and Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird.

On the Vietnamese side were Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam and his spouse; Consul General in Sydney Nguyen Thanh Tung; Consul General in Perth Pham Hai Anh; officials and staff of Vietnamese representative missions in Australia; and Vietnamese community representatives in Australia.

Since the upgrade of bilateral relations to a  Strategic Partnership in March 2024, Vietnam-Australia ties have seen strong, comprehensive and substantive development across almost all fields, as evidenced by growing high-level political trust and shared determination to fulfill high-level commitments.

The visit aims to further consolidate political trust at the highest level, inject new momentum into the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and chart priorities for future cooperation. It also offers an opportunity for leaders of both nations to engage in in-depth discussions on regional and international issues of mutual concern and enhance coordination at multilateral forums, reaffirming their joint commitment to peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development globally and in the region.

Furthermore, the visit represents a key step in realizing the foreign policy set out at the 14th National Party Congress as a way of deepening relations with comprehensive strategic partners in a practical, effective, and sustainable manner.
