VOV.VN - Minister Counselor Nguyen Hai Luu, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, called for an immediate end to Middle East conflicts, full protection of maritime security, and strong support for a two-State solution in the Middle East at a UN Security Council open debate on July 28.
Chaired by the Democratic Republic of the Congo as Security Council President for July, the debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, drew delegates from over 60 UN member states alongside senior UN officials.
Participants expressed deep concern that despite a temporary cooling period, regional crisis risks reigniting, warning that developments in Gaza and the West Bank continue to erode prospects for a two-State solution.
Member states called for maintaining ceasefires, ensuring safe and unhindered humanitarian access, protecting civilians and critical infrastructure, and stepping up diplomatic efforts toward a lasting political settlement.
Speaking at the session, the Vietnamese representative voiced deep concern over persistent instability across the region, particularly in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, Gaza, the West Bank, and Southern Lebanon.
He noted that these developments cause severe human casualties, disrupt trade and energy supplies, hinder humanitarian relief, and affect the implementation of UNSC Resolution 2803 as well as US-Iran talks. Vietnam stressed that civilians and essential facilities must be protected under all circumstances, while freedom of navigation and aviation must be maintained in line with international law, particularly UNCLOS 1982.
Vietnam welcomed the resumption of US-Iran talks and hailed mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, Türkiye, Switzerland, and other partners in keeping communication channels open and advancing negotiations.
The country urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, engage in constructive dialogue, and show good faith in implementing agreed arrangements. On this occasion, the Vietnamese delegation called on the international community not to let new developments in the Middle East overshadow the Palestinian question.
Vietnam reaffirmed its steadfast support for the Palestinian people's legitimate and inalienable right to self-determination, the State of Palestine's full UN membership, and a two-State solution based on pre-1967 borders in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions, aiming for a fair, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East.
As global trade continues to face mounting uncertainty, the Middle East and South Asia are emerging as promising destinations for Vietnamese exports, according to insiders.
