Vietnam puts forward three orientations to enhance Mekong-RoK cooperation

VOV.VN - Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung proposed three major orientations to expand development space and generate new growth drivers for Mekong countries and the Republic of Korea (RoK) at the 14th Mekong-RoK Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila, the Philippines, on July 23.

The meeting, held at the International Convention Center within the framework of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-59) and related meetings, was co-chaired by the Foreign Ministers of Thailand and the RoK.

Outlining Vietnam's strategic proposals, Minister Le Hoai Trung stressed that the 2027-2031 Action Plan must remain focused and feasible, maintaining a people-centered community vision aligned with the principles of the Mekong-RoK Strategic Partnership for People, Prosperity and Peace. Second, the mechanism should prioritize cross-border projects, particularly in water resource management, climate adaptation, digital transformation, and logistics connections to create sub-region-wide spillover effects.

Third, he suggested developing the Mekong-RoK Forum into a regular dialogue mechanism connecting governments, academia, research institutes, and the private sector to formulate actionable policy recommendations and bankable project ideas, while enhancing the efficiency of the Mekong-RoK Business Forum and the Mekong-RoK Water Center.

Highlighting Vietnam's role as co-chair in 2025, Minister Trung noted close coordination with the RoK and Mekong nations to maintain high-level exchanges, enhance the efficiency of the Mekong-RoK Business Forum, host the first Mekong-RoK Forum, and advance innovative water management solutions at the 3rd Mekong-RoK Water Forum.

At the conference, member countries praised the co-chairmanship of Vietnam and the RoK in 2025 and applauded the 15-year progress of Mekong-RoK cooperation. Through the Mekong-RoK Cooperation Fund, 78 projects worth nearly US$40 million have been carried out to support Mekong countries in improving environmental quality, resolving water pollution, developing smart agriculture, and promoting recycling solutions.

The meeting adopted a Co-Chairs' Statement, agreeing on directions for the 2027-2031 Action Plan focused on digital transformation, climate resilience, smart agriculture, rural development, tourism, and cultural industries, while concurring on the early resumption of the Mekong-RoK Summit.
