VOV.VN - A 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck Mang Den commune in central Quang Ngai province at a depth of approximately 8.1km on July 12, according to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Earth Sciences.
The earthquake jolted the area at around 10.25 and posed no natural disaster risk, said he Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre, adding it was monitoring the quake.
Earlier, on July 7 and 8, two earthquakes measuring 3.3 and 2.6 respectively on the Richter scale also occurred in Kon Plong and Son Ky communes, Quang Ngai province, both without any hazardous impact.
Since 2021, hundreds of earthquakes have been recorded in the region, formerly part of Kon Tum province, some of which caused noticeable tremors. Notably, a 5.0-magnitude quake occurred on July 28, 2024, and a 4.7-magnitude quake on August 23, 2022.
Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre, attributed these events to induced seismicity from nearby hydro power plant reservoirs.
While earthquakes are expected to continue in the area, it is unlikely they will exceed magnitude 5.5, said the expert.
The Institute of Geophysics is currently operating 11 monitoring stations in the region to conduct ongoing seismic research and assessment.
