VOV.VN - Mang But commune of central Quang Ngai province has experienced 14 earthquakes over the past 10 hours, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 4.9, according to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics.
The strongest quake occurred at 1:28:42 a.m. on October 6, at a depth of approximately 8.1 km in Mang But. Despite occurring at night, many residents in the surrounding areas clearly felt the shaking.
Three more earthquakes below magnitude 3 were recorded in the same locality during the morning of October 6.
On October 5 alone, the region experienced 10 consecutive earthquakes, including two above magnitude 4. One quake measuring 4.3 occurred at 7:00:52 p.m. at a depth of 8.1 km, while another of magnitude 4.2 was reported about five minutes earlier.
The tremors were felt in multiple nearby localities, including Da Nang City and Gia Lai province. A level 1 natural disaster risk warning was issued.
Mang But commune, formerly part of Kon Plong district in Kon Tum province, has been a hotspot for earthquakes over the years in the Central Highlands region and is also home to an operating hydropower reservoir.
Experts identify these as induced earthquakes, which began in April 2021 with hundreds of tremors documented. The strongest quake in this sequence reached magnitude 5.0 on July 28, 2024, causing widespread shaking across the Central Highlands and South-central coast regions.
According to experts, earthquakes in this area are expected to continue in the coming days, closely linked to the water storage cycle of the hydropower reservoir. However, the likelihood of a quake exceeding magnitude 5 is considered very low.
