VOV.VN - Australia is providing an additional AUD800,000 in humanitarian assistance to support communities in central Vietnam affected by Typhoons Fengshen and Kalmaegi, according to the Embassy of Australia in Hanoi.
The amount adds to the AUD3 million already announced to assist those impacted by Typhoons Bualoi and Matmo, the embassy said in a press release on November 13.
Over the past weeks, subsequent typhoons have had a devastating impact across localities in Vietnam, especially in the central region. Typhoon Kalmaegi alone claimed the lives of six people, following weeks of record rainfall and severe flooding that previously killed 50 people and caused widespread destruction of homes, businesses, and livelihoods in central Vietnam.
According to the embassy, Australia is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and destruction. Its assistance, to be delivered through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, in close collaboration with the Government of Vietnam, will ensure the most vulnerable, including women, children and people with disabilities can access lifesaving assistance.
"As a Comprehensive Strategic Partner, we have responded quickly to Vietnam’s call for support. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with local partners to ensure our support reaches those who need it most,” said Ambassador Gillian Bird.
“I want to extend my heartfelt sympathies to everyone impacted by recent flooding and typhoons in Central Vietnam.”
“Australia is committed to offering support where it’s needed most. We’re working with partners to provide assistance and help communities recover and rebuild.”
The Vietnam Red Cross Society has launched an emergency relief operation to support residents in Dak Lak, Gia Lai, and Quang Ngai provinces, severely impacted by Typhoon Kalmaegi and its aftermath.
