Can Tho steps up cooperation in education, climate response with Australia

At the meeting, Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee, highlighted the city’s expanded scale following its administrative consolidation with the former Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces. Covering approximately 6,300 square kilometers with a population of 4.2 million, Can Tho continues to reinforce its position as the economic, service, educational, and scientific-technological hub of the Mekong Delta.

Local leaders highly appreciated the effective support from the Australian Government, its Embassy, Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as Australian universities and businesses. Australia’s contributions have ranged from iconic infrastructure projects like the My Thuan and Vam Cong bridges to sustainable agriculture programs, climate resilience initiatives, and high-quality human resource training. Academic ties between Australian universities and institutions in Can Tho have delivered practical results for the region.

Facing severe pressures along more than 100 kilometers of the Hau River and 70 kilometers of eastern coastline from riverbank and coastal erosion as well as saltwater intrusion, Can Tho expressed its desire for continued strategic support from Minister Anne Aly and the Australian Government, particularly through advanced technological solutions to tackle these environmental challenges.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Minister Anne Aly noted that if the Mekong Delta is a 'breadbasket' nourishing physical needs, Can Tho serves as an 'educational center' nurturing intellect and the soul.

She emphasized that combining these two strengths plays a key role in ensuring sustainable development, food security, and shared regional prosperity.

Highlighting education, training, and people-to-people exchanges as core pillars of bilateral relations, the Australian Minister pointed to impressive figures: over 31,000 Vietnamese students studying in Australia, more than 300 university partnerships, 10% of Can Tho University lecturers holding Australian degrees, and over 260 Australian Government scholarship alumni working across the Mekong Delta.

 She reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to addressing shared challenges, particularly climate change, to build a resilient agricultural and manufacturing sector based on equality, mutual listening, and learning.

Economic ties between the two sides continue to expand. Can Tho currently hosts four Australian FDI projects with a total registered capital of more than US$25 million. During the six-month period, the city’s export turnover to Australia reached an estimated US$47.5 million, comprising mainly seafood, agricultural produce, processed foods, and garments.
