Northern mountainous floods leave 4 dead, cause US$10 million in damage

VOV.VN - Prolonged heavy rain over the past few days in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam has caused heavy losses in human life and property, leaving four people dead, four missing, and causing damages of approximately VND255 billion (US$10 million).

Localities are continuing to urgently respond to and overcome the aftermath amid high risks of flash floods and landslides, according to the quick report released on July 19 by the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA)

All four deaths, four missing, and nine injured people occurred in Lai Chau province. This province suffered the heaviest damage, estimating about VND190 billion (US$ 7.45 million).

The heavy rain collapsed 21 houses, damaged 144 houses, forced the emergency relocation of 275 households, and flooded or eroded 64 houses. Nearly 700 hectares of rice and crops were damaged, and many traffic routes in Lai Chau, Son La, Dien Bien, and Lao Cai provinces were seriously eroded. Several locations on National Highway 32 in Lai Chau and 18 points on Provincial Road 109 in Son La could not clear traffic by the morning of July 19.

Over the past three days, many places recorded very large rainfall, such as Che Tao (Lao Cai) at 569 mm, Nam Pam (Son La) at 438 mm, and Tua Sin Chai (Lai Chau) at 380 mm. The northern mountainous region is forecast to continue having moderate to heavy rain, with localized amounts over 150 mm, bringing risks of flash floods, landslides, and local flooding during the day and night of July 19.

The Prime Minister, ministries, sectors, and localities have issued many official dispatches to direct response efforts before the complex developments of the natural disaster.

A working delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, led by Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep, arrived in Lai Chau to direct recovery efforts on the morning of July 19.

Military and police forces, along with local authorities, are urgently searching for the missing, supporting residents, repairing traffic, and continuing to closely monitor rain and flood developments to proactively respond.
