VOV.VN - Hoang Huong Giang, a Vietnamese student who achieved outstanding results in the country's national upper secondary school graduation examination, has chosen to study computer science at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) under a Samsung-funded scholarship.
Industry observers in the Republic of Korea (RoK) say the move illustrates the company's long-term strategy to build a global talent pipeline in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.
Giang, a student at the High School for Gifted Students under Hanoi National University of Education, achieved a perfect SAT score, an IELTS score of 8.0 and ranked joint first nationwide in Group A01 of Vietnam's 2026 national upper secondary school graduation examination.
She has chosen to pursue a four-year degree in computer science at KAIST under a scholarship sponsored by Samsung.
Giang's case reflects Samsung's strategy of identifying and nurturing outstanding talent in multiple countries to develop future specialists in strategic technologies, including AI, semiconductors, Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT).
At the heart of this strategy is Samsung Innovation Campus, a programme launched in 2019 that now operates in about 40 countries, providing young people with training in AI, IoT, programming, Big Data and other digital technologies.
Among its overseas markets, Vietnam has been identified by Samsung as a key location for developing high-quality technology talent. In April, Samsung Vietnam launched the 2026 Samsung Innovation Campus programme in Bac Ninh province, in cooperation with the National Innovation Centre (NIC) and High Tech Vietnam. For the first time, this year's programme includes a semiconductor technology course alongside training in AI, IoT and Big Data.
Samsung plans to work with about 20 universities and colleges to train more than 2,200 trainees in 2026, as Vietnam pursues its goal of training 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030. The company says it will provide training programmes ranging from basic to advanced levels while also training instructors to expand training capacity.
In parallel, Samsung has established technology talent development centres in Vietnam equipped with STEM laboratories, XR/VR practice facilities and semiconductor design simulation laboratories. In June, the company signed a memorandum of understanding covering the 2026-2028 period with three institutions: the VNU University of Engineering and Technology, the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The cooperation covers training, research, human resource development, scholarships, internships and recruitment.
Under the agreement, Samsung will provide scholarships worth about VND17 billion to outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students in information technology, AI, electronics and telecommunications, multimedia and cybersecurity. Since 2012, the company has invested about VND180 billion in cooperation programmes with Vietnamese universities.
Samsung is also expanding AI talent development beyond Vietnam. In the five member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Samsung Innovation Campus programme has recently trained 216 trainees through courses lasting about 350 hours, covering AI, machine learning, data science, deep learning and natural language processing.
According to Na Ki-hong, Executive Vice President and Head of Strategic Cooperation at Samsung Vietnam, in the AI era, Samsung is pursuing a strategy of developing a highly qualified research and development (R&D) workforce to adapt to rapid changes in the global technology market.
Samsung will intensify efforts to develop a highly skilled technology workforce and provide technical consulting services, thereby expanding opportunities for technologically capable Vietnamese enterprises that meet global standards to join Samsung's supply chain while promoting technology transfer activities.
