VOV.VN - Vietnam recorded 71 road traffic accidents on January 2, resulting in 41 deaths and 56 injuries, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.
No incidents were reported on railways or waterways, said the committee.
Compared with the same day in 2025, the number of accidents rose slightly by one, while fatalities decreased by three and injuries increased by eight.
Police nationwide handled 11,117 traffic violations, imposing fines totaling over VND34.2 billion and temporarily seizing more than 3,800 vehicles. Authorities suspended 423 driver licenses and deducted points from 2,114 others.
Major violations included 3,373 cases of drunk driving and 1,670 speeding offenses. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, traffic flowed smoothly, with no major congestion or severe accidents reported.
Meanwhile, 49 road traffic accidents occurred nationwide on January 1, leaving 18 dead and 41 injured. Compared with the same day in 2025, the number of accidents fell by 24, deaths dropped by 23, and injuries decreased slightly by two.
The committee noted that despite higher travel demand during the first two days of the four-day New Year holiday, traffic safety and order were maintained across the country.
Hanoi will put a network of 1,873 AI cameras in operation at all city intersections in December, gradually enhancing infrastructure, improving safety and helping reduce traffic congestion across the capital.
