VOV.VN - The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has decided to temporarily suspend flight operations at Van Don international airport in Quang Ninh province and Cat Bi international airport in Hai Phong city from 11:00 p.m. on July 21 to 12:00 p.m. on July 22 due to the impact of typhoon Wipha.
In a decision made on July 21, the CAAV said, all flights during this period will be canceled, and passengers will be rebooked on new itineraries once airport operations resume.
These precautionary measures are taken to ensure passenger and flight safety, as Wipha is said to bring strong winds, heavy rain, and low visibility all of which can seriously affect takeoffs and landings. In addition, they can help protect airport infrastructure and ground operations from potential storm damage, and coordinate emergency responses and rescheduling logistics.
The aviation authority also instructed Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and Tho Xuan International Airport in Thanh Hoa province to continue monitoring weather updates and propose adjustments to their operations accordingly.
Major airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietjet Air, have also canceled or adjusted multiple domestic and international flights to ensure passenger and crew safety.
For airlines, the CAAV required them to proactively inform passengers of any changes to flight schedules so they can plan their travel appropriately.
Wipha, after pounding southern China and moving into the Gulf of Tonkin on July 21, is regaining force, packing winds of more than 100kph near its centre. The typhoon is forecast to make landfall on July 22.
