VOV.VN - The navies of Vietnam and Cambodia have successfully completed their 83rd joint patrol, underscoring ongoing cooperation in maintaining maritime security, safety and stability in the historic waters shared by the two neighbouring countries.
Ship 251 of Squadron 512 under Brigade 127 of the Vietnam People’s Navy returned to Naval Region 5's military port in Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang province on June 13, after completing the latest joint patrol with the Royal Cambodian Navy.
The patrol was conducted on June 12 in the historic waters between Vietnam and Cambodia. Participating vessels included Ship 251 of the Vietnam People's Navy and Ship 1141 from Ream Naval Base of the Royal Cambodian Navy.
During the mission, naval personnel from both countries carried out the Hello ASEAN greeting protocol used among ASEAN navies, exchanged operational information and conducted training on visual communications using hand flags and signal lights in accordance with the International Code of Signals.
The two sides also organised a joint search-and-rescue exercise aimed at enhancing coordination and response capabilities at sea.
According to military officé, the patrol was intended to help maintain security, order, peace and stability in the shared maritime area while supporting the long-standing fishing and livelihood activities of local communities from both countries.
The operation also contributes to efforts to combat illegal fishing and strengthen practical cooperation between the two naval forces.
Joint patrols between the Vietnam People's Navy and the Royal Cambodian Navy have been conducted regularly for many years as part of bilateral defence cooperation mechanisms.
Recent patrols have focused on maritime security, search-and-rescue coordination, implementation of international maritime signaling procedures and improving communication between the two forces.
In April 2025, the two navies held the 35th review conference on previous joint patrol activities. Representatives from both sides assessed the patrol mechanism as an effective tool for maintaining order and security in the historic waters while promoting mutual understanding, trust and friendship between the armed forces of Vietnam and Cambodia.
The latest patrol reflects the continued commitment of both countries to maintaining a peaceful maritime environment and expanding practical cooperation in areas of shared interest.
