VOV.VN - Vietnam has announced US$300,000 in emergency humanitarian assistance for Venezuela following the devastating twin earthquakes on June 24 that has left more than 3,500 dead and nearly 17,000 injured.
The emergency assistance reflects the longstanding friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Venezuela, as well as Vietnam’s commitment to supporting countries affected by natural disasters.
In addition to financial assistance, Vietnam promptly dispatched professional search-and-rescue teams to Venezuela to assist local authorities in locating victims and responding to the disaster.
The Vietnamese rescue mission comprises 124 personnel from the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Public Security.
The Ministry of National Defence deployed 82 officers and soldiers, supported by specialised vehicles and equipment. The contingent includes a command unit, an urban search-and-rescue engineering team, a medical unit, canine search teams and other rescue personnel.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Security sent a 42-member rescue team tasked with search-and-rescue operations and disaster relief. The officers brought specialised equipment and expertise to work alongside Venezuelan authorities and international rescue teams.
The mission also transported around 100 tonnes of relief supplies and equipment, including emergency food rations, tents, generators and medical supplies to support communities affected by the earthquake.
Vietnamese rescue teams have already arrived in Venezuela and begun operations in some of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake.
Working in coordination with Venezuelan authorities, the teams conducted search-and-rescue missions in Playa Grande, La Guaira state, where they successfully recovered dozens of victims from collapsed structures before handing them over to local authorities.
According to Major General Pham Van Ty, head of the Vietnamese rescue mission in Venezuela, the operation has been one of the most challenging international search-and-rescue missions undertaken by the team, with personnel working in hazardous conditions amid unstable collapsed structures and the continuing risk of aftershocks.
Despite the difficult operating environment, he said the mission viewed the effort to locate and recover victims not only as a professional duty but also as an expression of Vietnam’s solidarity with the Venezuelan people during a time of hardship.
Maj. Gen. Ty affirmed that the Vietnamese rescue teams would continue carrying out their mission with the highest sense of responsibility, overcoming difficulties and dangers to help bring victims out from the rubble as quickly as possible.
“Driven by our sense of international responsibility and, above all, by the solidarity and friendship of the Vietnamese people with our international partners, we will spare no effort to locate and recover victims at the earliest possible time,” he said.
The deployment forms part of Vietnam’s broader humanitarian response, combining financial assistance, emergency relief supplies and professional rescue capabilities to support Venezuela's recovery efforts.
The assistance also underscores Vietnam’s active role in international disaster response and humanitarian cooperation while reaffirming the longstanding friendship between Vietnam and Venezuela and promoting solidarity in addressing the challenges posed by natural disasters.
