Vietnam tops foreign student numbers in RoK

VOV.VN -Foreign enrollment at higher education institutions in the Republic of Korea (RoK) surpassed 300,000 for the first time to reach 307,464 this year, up 21.3% from 2025, according to official statistics released on August 26 by the Ministry of Education and the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI).

Notably, Vietnam claimed the top spot in foreign student numbers in the RoK for the first time, with 96,834 students, accounting for 31.5% of the total. China ranked second with 78,890 students (25.7%), followed by Uzbekistan (20,876), Nepal (20,118), and Mongolia (17,189).

Alongside the rapid surge in foreign international students, the number of students from multicultural backgrounds at RoK primary, middle, and high schools also continued to rise. In 2026, this group expanded to 210,838 students, up 8,630, or 4.3%, from the previous year, even as the total student enrollment across all levels dropped by 189,007 to 5.36 million.

According to the statistics, the population of multicultural students continued to grow amid a low birth rate that has reduced overall student enrollment in the RoK. Within this group, students with a foreign parent make up a substantial proportion.

Vietnam’s emergence as the RoK's top source of international students for the first time underscores growing bilateral educational ties amid a broader surge in foreign enrollment.

Vietnam becoming the largest source of international students in the RoK for the first time shows the growing scope of bilateral educational exchanges amid a sharp overall increase in foreign students studying in the RoK.
