Vietnamese press urged to lead information and shape public discourse

The message was delivered at a national press conference held in Hanoi on June 16 to mark the 101st anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925–2026).

Opening the conference, Voice of Vietnam (VOV) President Do Tien Sy said Vietnam’s revolutionary press is entering a period of significant transformation amid rapid digitalisation and profound changes in the media landscape.

He emphasised that, throughout different periods of history, accompanying the nation and serving the people have remained the fundamental mission and honour of revolutionary journalists.

According to him, the role of journalism extends beyond reporting events and reflecting social realities. Media organisations also contribute to identifying emerging issues, promoting positive values, and helping generate solutions to challenges arising during the country’s development process.

“Journalism draws its voice from the realities of everyday life. It serves as an early warning system for issues that require attention, encourages positive values, and at times helps suggest solutions to social challenges,” he said.

He added that the press also serves as an important bridge between citizens and policymakers, helping strengthen social consensus and inspire national development aspirations.

In recent years, VOV and other media organisations have actively communicated Party directives, strategic resolutions, and key messages from national leaders, contributing to greater public understanding of major policies and development goals.

In his closing remarks, Pham Tat Thang, deputy head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation, highlighted the more than 100-year tradition of Vietnam’s revolutionary press and stressed the need for continued innovation.

He reminded that in response to the demands of a new development stage, media organisations should transition from being mere providers of information to becoming institutions capable of leading information flows, participating in policy development, and guiding public opinion.

Thang also called on the press to accelerate digital transformation, expand its presence across digital platforms, and strengthen its capacity to compete in the online information environment while ensuring information is accurate, timely, and relevant.

He further emphasised the importance of building a professional corps of journalists with strong political commitment, high ethical standards, and modern professional skills capable of meeting the increasingly complex demands of contemporary journalism.

The conference reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to developing a professional, human-centred, and modern press system aligned with the country’s development objectives in the years ahead.
