VOV.VN - As Vietnam accelerates its digital transformation, media organisations should embrace innovation, master new technologies and strengthen the quality of journalism to be effective in a rapidly evolving information environment.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man was speaking during a meeting with leaders of media organisations in Hanoi on June 14 ahead of the 101st anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21).
The press must continue to play a pioneering role in shaping public discourse, promoting national development and adapting to the challenges of the digital era, he stressed.
According to the top legislator, media organisations have closely followed the resolution of the 14th National Party Congress and effectively communicated major policies and development priorities of the Party and State. The press has provided comprehensive coverage of socio-economic developments, including administrative restructuring, government reforms and national growth objectives.
In his view, journalism continues to serve as an important force in safeguarding the Party’s ideological foundation, countering misinformation and hostile narratives, and strengthening the role of credible and authoritative information in society.
He also acknowledged the efforts made by media organisations to adapt to a rapidly changing communications landscape.
“Media organisations have renewed their thinking and transformed the way they operate in order to keep pace with a communications environment that is becoming increasingly dynamic and challenging,” he said.
The National Assembly leader highlighted the growing investment by media organisations in digital technologies and newsroom modernisation.
Many outlets have adopted integrated newsroom models, expanded multimedia operations and developed teams of journalists capable of working across multiple platforms and formats.
These changes, he said, have helped news organisations respond more effectively to the demands of digital audiences and increasing competition for public attention.
He also praised in-depth reporting and investigative journalism that contribute to public debate, promote positive social values and provide forums for citizens to engage with important issues.
Looking ahead, the top legislator called on media organisations to further promote public understanding of major national policies and strategic development initiatives, including recent messages from General Secretary and State President To Lam on Vietnam’s development goals in the new era and key strategic resolutions issued by the Politburo.
Beyond covering the activities of the National Assembly and Government, he noted media organisations should further strengthen their role as a bridge between policymakers and citizens by accurately reflecting public concerns, aspirations and recommendations.
“Journalists are frontline contributors on the ideological and cultural front, helping eliminate negative practices, protect what is right and spread positive values throughout society,” he reminded.
He also stressed the importance of enhancing political awareness, professional competence, ethical standards and adaptability among journalists as digital transformation continues to reshape the media industry.
At the meeting, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Lam Thi Phuong Thanh said Vietnam’s media system is undergoing notable changes in both organisational structure and technological development.
Many media organisations have expanded their presence on digital platforms and adopted new content formats, including podcasts, short-form videos and infographics, in an effort to engage audiences more effectively.
According to the minister, Vietnam currently has 733 media organisations, including 98 newspapers, 597 magazines and 38 radio and television broadcasters. The figure represents a reduction of 189 organisations following efforts to streamline and restructure the media system.
Representatives of media organisations also called for continued government support through improved commissioning mechanisms, digital transformation policies and legal frameworks better suited to the realities of modern media.
Several participants emphasised that attracting and retaining highly qualified journalists will be critical to ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the profession.
