Vietnam U22 crowned SEA Games 33 champions after dramatic comeback against Thailand

VOV.VN - Vietnam U22 claimed a historic gold medal at SEA Games 33 with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Thailand U22 in the men’s football final on December 18 at Rajamangala Stadium, Thailand.

Vietnam U22 started the final strongly, building smooth attacks and pressing Thailand into their own half during the first ten minutes. Thailand, meanwhile, remained cautious, reluctant to push forward.

The breakthrough came in the 19th minute. In a seemingly low-risk situation, Quoc Cuong fouled a Thai player from around 27 meters out. Burapha stepped up and delivered a flawless free-kick to beat goalkeeper Trung Kien.

Following the concession, Vietnam U22 pressed forward eagerly but left gaps in defense. In the 31st minute, Thailand capitalized on a swift counterattack, with Seksan scoring to extend the lead to 2-0. By halftime, Vietnam trailed by two goals.

In the second half, coach Kim Sang Sik made tactical changes, bringing Thanh Nhan and Van Thuan on, which helped Vietnam regain momentum.

In the 49th minute, Dinh Bac made a rapid run and collided with the Thai goalkeeper inside the box. The referee awarded a penalty, and Dinh Bac calmly converted from 11 meters, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

In the 61st minute, from a Van Thuan corner, the Thai goalkeeper misjudged the ball, allowing Ly Duc to press Choolthong into an own goal, leveling the score at 2-2.

No further goals were scored during regular time, taking the match into extra time. In the 96th minute, Van Thuan controlled the ball and shot inside the Thai box; the goalkeeper parried it straight to Thanh Nhan, who calmly finished to make it 3-2 for Vietnam.

The 3-2 scoreline stood until the final whistle, awarding Vietnam U22 the SEA Games 33 gold medal.

Later that evening, following Vietnam’s men’s U22 football team and women’s national futsal team both securing gold medals at SEA Games 33, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a congratulatory letter to the coaching staff and teams.

In his letter, the PM wrote: “On behalf of the Government and football fans nationwide, I warmly congratulate the coaching staff, the entire men’s U22 national football team, and the women’s national futsal team for their resilient and outstanding performance to win SEA Games 33 gold. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication and tireless efforts of the teams throughout the tournament.”

He also wished both teams continued success in future competitions.
