VOV.VN - The number of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City grew 41% over the past five years, marking the fastest growth among all economic sectors in the southern hub.
The figures were released at a conference summarizing the city's 2026 Economic Census on July 30.
According to the census, Ho Chi Minh City had 296,759 active businesses by the end of 2025, up 17.1% from 2020, posting an average annual growth of 3.2%. Non-state domestic enterprises continued to dominate, accounting for 95.2% of the total with 282,416 firms.
Meanwhile, the FDI sector recorded the highest growth rate, reaching 14,032 enterprises. This 41% surge compared to 2020 underscores the city’s growing attractiveness to foreign investors.
Though representing under 5% of all active firms, the FDI block generated over VND 3,869 trillion in converted net revenue in 2025, contributing more than 31% of the city’s total. Converted capital held by FDI firms reached nearly VND 5.5 trillion, up 65.5% from 2020, cementing its position as a key growth engine for the local economy.
In the first half of this year, the national economic engine attracted US$ 6.8 billion in FDI, up more than 114% year-on-year. The city has already fulfilled 61.8% of its full-year target of US$ 11 billion within six months.
Further reflecting this positive momentum, the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham) established its national headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City starting this July, as it transitions to a unified nationwide operating structure.
This marks the end of separate operations for AmCham Ho Chi Minh City and AmCham Hanoi, signaling a major milestone for the US business community in Vietnam. With over 650 corporate members and 3,000 individual professionals, AmCham stands among the largest foreign business associations in the country.
