Vietnam and Cambodia push infrastructure connectivity, expand economic cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and visiting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held high-level talks in Hanoi on June 8, agreeing on several key directions to strengthen infrastructure connectivity and expand economic cooperation between the two countries.

PM Hung reaffirmed that Vietnam consistently prioritises relations with Cambodia under the spirit of good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term sustainability.

Vietnam, he said, believes Cambodia will continue its strong development trajectory and achieve its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030.

PM Hun Manet congratulated Vietnam on its recent socio-economic achievements, noting that the country’s economic growth exceeded 8% in 2025, among the highest rates in the region.

The two leaders agreed that Vietnam–Cambodia relations have continued to develop positively in recent years. Political trust has been strengthened, defence and security cooperation remains a key pillar, while trade, investment and tourism have maintained stable growth momentum.

In economic cooperation, bilateral trade reached nearly US$5 billion during the first four months of 2026, up 9.6% compared to the same period last year. Vietnam also welcomed around 400,000 Cambodian visitors, reflecting the strong recovery of tourism and cross-border travel between the two countries.

A major focus of the talks was enhancing infrastructure connectivity and strengthening economic linkages along the shared border. Both sides agreed to accelerate key projects, including the Ho Chi Minh City – Moc Bai – Bavet – Phnom Penh expressway.

The two countries also agreed to study the expansion of direct flight connections between Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as broader air connectivity linking Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

In addition, the two governments will explore the development of cross-border economic zones, facilitate customs clearance procedures and strengthen logistics cooperation to improve regional supply chain connectivity.

On investment cooperation, PM Hun Manet supported Vietnam’s proposal to create favourable conditions for businesses from both countries to expand partnerships in areas such as agricultural and seafood processing, clean energy, construction materials and logistics.

The two leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in education and training, human resource development and public awareness activities highlighting the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia.

At the conclusion of the talks, both sides assigned relevant ministries and agencies to develop detailed implementation plans to ensure the agreed initiatives are carried out effectively and on schedule.

Beyond bilateral ties, Vietnam and Cambodia reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination at regional and international forums including ASEAN, Mekong cooperation mechanisms and the United Nations, contributing to peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.
