VOV.VN - Vietnam will continue to work closely alongside the United Nation to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), promote international integration, and actively contribute to global efforts for peace, stability, and prosperity.
State President Luong Cuong was speaking during his meeting with Pauline Tamesis, UN Resident Coordinator, and the heads of UN agencies in Vietnam, in Hanoi on September 18.
President Cuong expressed his delight at the strong development of Vietnam–UN cooperation, emphasising that the UN has always been a close partner in Vietnam’s development journey. He highly valued the support of UN agencies in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, socio-economic recovery, climate change response, disaster relief, as well as in promoting a just energy transition.
The President highlighted Vietnam’s efforts to achieve two centennial strategic goals of becoming a modern industrialized, upper-middle-income country by 2030, and a high-income developed country by 2045. The country is also focusing on enhancing international integration, private sector development, digital transformation, science and technology, innovation, education, health care, and legal frameworks.
He called on UN agencies to work closely and provide effective support, particularly in policy advice, science and technology promotion, and capacity building.
The President said he would lead a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to the High-Level General Debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA-80) in New York, USA. He noted the special significance of the event, coinciding with important anniversaries for both the UN and Vietnam, and emphasised the ongoing reform efforts to increase efficiency and adapt to contemporary demands.
He said Vietnam would share its story of overcoming hardships, healing war wounds, achieving remarkable development, deepening international integration, while urging countries to uphold the value of peace and pursue sustainable transformation.
President Cuong reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong support for multilateralism and the central role of the UN in global governance, pledging continued active and responsible contributions to international efforts for peace, stability, cooperation, and development.
He welcomed the UN80 initiative put forward by the UN Secretary General, and expressed readiness to cooperate in allowing UN agencies to establish offices and centres in Vietnam.
On global issues such as gender equality, climate change, artificial intelligence, and global health, the President emphasised Vietnam’s commitment to fulfilling international obligations, implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), and supporting the UN’s leading role in global governance and cooperation.
He also requested close collaboration to ensure the success of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ official visit and the signing ceremony of the UN Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi at the end of October 2025.
For her part, UN Resident Coordinator Tamesis praised Vietnam’s strong leadership and commitment to multilateralism and the UN, noting the country’s remarkable achievements in poverty reduction, socio-economic development, institutional reform, gender equality, digital transformation, and inclusive development.
She affirmed that the UN would continue to accompany and support Vietnam in these areas, contributing to the realisation of strategic goals.
