Vietnam reaffirms role in advancing ASEAN-Russia cooperation

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Le Minh Hung will lead a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to the ASEAN-Russia Summit in Kazan, Russia, from June 17 to 19, underscoring Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening ties between ASEAN and Russia and promoting regional cooperation.

According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi, the working trip reflects Vietnam's strong emphasis on both its bilateral relationship with Russia and the broader ASEAN-Russia partnership.

Vietnam continues to play an important role in facilitating dialogue and cooperation between Russia and Southeast Asia, the ambassador told Moscow-based VOV correspondents.

The trip marks Prime Minister Le Minh Hung’s first visit to Russia since assuming office. On the sidelines of the summit, he is expected to meet with leaders from several countries, including senior Russian officials, to review recent cooperation and discuss future directions for bilateral relations.

Expanding Vietnam-Russia relations

Ambassador Khoi noted that 2026 has seen active engagement between Vietnam and Russia through a series of high-level exchanges.

Following the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Russian President Vladimir Putin became the first foreign leader to hold a congratulatory phone call with General Secretary and President To Lam. Vietnam also dispatched a special envoy to Russia to brief Russian leaders on the congress's outcomes and discuss new areas of cooperation.

Recent exchanges between senior leaders of both countries have demonstrated a shared commitment to maintaining momentum in the Vietnam-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across political, economic, trade, scientific, technological, energy and people-to-people cooperation.

ASEAN-Russia partnership at a milestone

The summit takes place as ASEAN and Russia mark 35 years of dialogue relations, a milestone that highlights the steady expansion of cooperation over the past three decades.

According to Ambassador Khoi, leaders attending the summit are expected to discuss measures to strengthen regional cooperation, promote sustainable development and support efforts to maintain peace and stability through dialogue and adherence to international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

He also noted that Vietnam has consistently supported Russia's engagement with ASEAN mechanisms since the early years of ASEAN-Russia relations and has contributed various initiatives aimed at deepening practical cooperation between the two sides.

Vietnam’s position as both a Comprehensive Strategic Partner of Russia and an active member of ASEAN provides opportunities to encourage greater cooperation between Russia and Southeast Asia, particularly at a time of significant global and regional change.

The Prime Minister's participation in the summit is therefore expected not only to contribute to the continued development of Vietnam-Russia relations but also to support broader efforts to strengthen ASEAN-Russia cooperation in the years ahead.
