VOV.VN - National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on March 3 offered incense and flowers at the Ben Duoc Martyrs Memorial as part of his working trip to Ho Chi Minh City, honouring generations of heroes who sacrificed for national independence and development.
In a solemn atmosphere, the delegation respectfully offered incense and flowers in remembrance of President Ho Chi Minh, Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces, and more than 45,600 martyrs whose names are inscribed at the memorial. They honoured those who fought and sacrificed for national liberation, as well as for the construction and defence of Vietnam.
Built on a seven-hectare campus in former Cu Chi district, the Ben Duoc Martyrs Memorial was inaugurated in phases beginning in 1993. The complex includes landscaped gardens, ceremonial gates, a stele house, a temple and a memorial tower. Its basement exhibition space features sculptures, bronze castings, paintings, models and historical documents depicting key events of the resistance war in the Saigon–Gia Dinh region (former name of Ho Chi Minh City today) under the theme “Saigon–Gia Dinh: Resilient and Unyielding.”
More than 45,600 martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the wars against French colonial rule and American intervention are commemorated at the site, making it a significant historical and educational landmark in southern Vietnam.
The delegation then made a tour of the Cu Chi Tunnels system, about 70 kilometers northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, a historic site associated with the heroic resistance of Vietnamese forces and civilians. With a tunnel system stretching over 200km, the site stands as a symbol of resilience and determination during wartime and has become internationally recognised as a landmark of 20th-century history, often referred to as the Iron Land of Cu Chi.
Writing in the memorial guestbook, Chairman Man expressed profound gratitude and reverence for the fallen heroes and for civilians and soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Saigon–Cho Lon–Gia Dinh region for national independence and reunification.
He called on the Party organisation, authorities, and people of Ho Chi Minh City to preserve and further promote the memorial site as a “red address” for revolutionary education, helping to foster patriotism and national pride among younger generations while contributing to the city’s development as a modern, dynamic and compassionate metropolis.
Also the same day, Chairman Man visited and presented gifts to Heroic Vietnamese Mother Nguyen Thi Hang in An Nhon Tay commune in recognition of the contributions made by families with meritorious service to the nation.
