Government chief outlines three key orientations for ASEAN-Russia cooperation

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Le Minh Hung outlined three key orientations for future ASEAN-Russia cooperation while addressing the ASEAN-Russia Business Forum, held in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan on June 17 as part of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit marking the 35th anniversary of relations.

The event drew the participation of ASEAN leaders, senior representatives of Russia and Tatarstan, as well as business associations, enterprises and research organisations from both sides, including the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the ASEAN-Russia Business Council and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council.

In his remarks, PM Hung highlighted the forum as an important opportunity for ASEAN and Russia to share strategic visions for broader, more substantive, better connected and more resilient cooperation amid global uncertainties. Drawing on the complementarities and potential of both sides, he outlined three key orientations for future cooperation.

First, he called for stronger efforts to build stable, flexible and resilient supply chains, while developing transport routes linking Russia's Far East with Southeast Asia to facilitate trade and create new business and investment opportunities.

Second, he underscored energy as a key pillar of ASEAN-Russia relations, noting that energy security remains one of the most pressing challenges facing sustainable growth and development. In this regard, he identified clean energy, liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, offshore wind power and energy-saving technologies as promising areas for investment and collaboration, and expressed hope that Vietnam, Russia and other ASEAN member states will accelerate practical projects contributing to regional energy stability and security.

Third,  the Vietnamese Government chief emphasized the importance of technology, innovation and digital transformation as major drivers of future ASEAN-Russia ties. He called for joint innovation programmes, support for technology firms and start-ups, and the development of a dynamic innovation ecosystem that will enhance closer connections between the business communities of both sides.

Expressing confidence in the long-term commitment of ASEAN and Russian businesses, Hung affirmed that Vietnam stands ready to act as a bridge for trade and investment cooperation between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), particularly Russia. He said greater cooperation can help translate potential into concrete projects, connectivity into business opportunities, and mutual trust into new growth momentum.

Representatives of ASEAN and Russian businesses highlighted the growing need to expand markets, increase investment and participate in stable and reliable international supply chains. With a combined population of around 850 million, ASEAN and Russia were seen as having significant potential for broader collaboration across a wide range of sectors.

Participants also noted that disruptions to global energy and food supply chains have made cooperation on energy and food security increasingly relevant to both sides. In addition, ASEAN's young and digitally connected population presents substantial opportunities for expanded cooperation in information technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

Many delegates said decades of cooperation, investment and business ties between ASEAN and Russia provide a solid foundation for enterprises from both sides to enhance links and expand their operations in the time to come.
