Traffic accidents fall sharply in numbers on Lunar New Year’s Day

VOV.VN - Vietnam recorded 46 traffic accidents nationwide on February 17, the first day of the Lunar New Year (Tet), resulting in 24 deaths and 41 injuries, according to the Traffic Police Department.

The figures marked significant declines compared with the same day in 2025, with 21 fewer accidents, eight fewer fatalities and 10 fewer injuries.

Authorities said traffic police across the country stepped up patrols and enforcement measures to maintain road safety. On the day, officers handled 6,129 traffic violations, issuing fines totaling an estimated more than VND21 billion.

Enforcement measures included the temporary seizure of 31 cars, 1,751 motorcycles and 85 other vehicles. Police also suspended 147 driving licenses and deducted points from 1,083 others under Vietnam’s traffic penalty system.

Alcohol-related offenses accounted for 1,570 cases, while 1,417 violations involved speeding. Other violations were overcrowding (16 cases), improper passenger pick-up and drop-off (21 cases), illegal use of mobile phones or electronic devices while driving (16 cases) and two drug-related offenses.

On February 16, 50 traffic accidents were documented, resulting in 28 deaths and 31 injuries.

Officials said the decline in accidents reflected intensified enforcement efforts and ongoing measures to improve road safety nationwide.
