VOV.VN - Vietnam’s 124-member rescue and relief delegation departed Venezuela on July 9 after completing a two-week humanitarian mission supporting search-and-rescue operations and post-earthquake recovery efforts in the South American country following the devastating twin earthquakes that struck in late June.
Working alongside Venezuelan emergency services in Playa Grande, one of the worst-affected areas, the team helped recover dozens of victims from collapsed buildings and identified multiple locations where additional victims were believed to remain trapped, enabling local authorities to continue search operations.
Beyond search-and-rescue efforts, the delegation also provided free medical examinations and medicines, distributed relief supplies, assisted residents in moving damaged belongings and supported local recovery efforts in affected communities.
Before departing Venezuela, the delegation donated medical equipment, medicines, food supplies, tents and US$15,000 raised through voluntary contributions to support post-earthquake recovery and help affected communities rebuild their lives.
In recognition of the team’s contributions, the Venezuelan government awarded the first-class Hero of Venezuela Medal to the delegation, the second-class Hero of Venezuela Medal to all 124 military and police personnel, and an order of merit for distinguished service to the team’s search-and-rescue canine unit.
At Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetia, La Guaira state, Vietnamese Ambassador to Venezuela Vu Trung My, Defence Attaché Colonel Vu The Trung, along with embassy officials, saw the delegation off as it began its journey back to Vietnam.
Daniel Gasparri, a Venezuelan Foreign Ministry official responsible for coordinating international relief missions, expressed appreciation for Vietnam's swift assistance despite the geographical distance separating the two countries. He said Vietnam's timely deployment of rescue personnel and humanitarian assistance had provided meaningful support as Venezuela continued recovering from one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years. He also thanked the Vietnamese team for its professionalism, compassion and solidarity with the Venezuelan people.
The Vietnamese mission comprised 124 personnel from the Vietnam People's Army and the Ministry of Public Security. It was Vietnam's third overseas humanitarian deployment, following earthquake relief operations in Turkey in 2023 and Myanmar in 2025.
