VOV.VN - Tourism on Vietnam's Phu Quoc island has remained stable following the recent marine accident, with travel operators reporting no wave of cancellations by Indian visitors.
India is one of Phu Quoc's fastest-growing international tourism markets. According to travel operators, Indian tourist groups continue to arrive on both international and domestic flights, including from Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, alongside visitors from other markets. While speedboat excursions have been suspended or adjusted, tour operators have replaced them with alternative sightseeing and leisure activities.
The steady flow of Indian visitors is also reflected in hotel occupancy and tour bookings. Le Anh Duy, sales and marketing director of Seashells Phu Quoc Hotel & Spa, said Indian visitors currently rank among the hotel's top five source markets. Arrivals from India have increased by 50% compared with the same period last year, and the hotel expects the market to continue growing. To better serve Indian guests, it has expanded menu options tailored to their preferences, particularly for its breakfast buffet.
Gaurav Verma, a representative of New Delhi-based travel company The Vietnam DMC, said the company continues to operate tours to Phu Quoc and other destinations in Vietnam. Speedboat tours have been replaced with alternatives such as the Hon Thom cable car and other sightseeing experiences, while travellers are offered flexible options to switch itineraries or cancel bookings. Ensuring visitor safety and service quality remained a priority, he stressed, adding that Vietnam, and Phu Quoc in particular, continues to appeal to Indian travellers.
The company also called on authorities in Phu Quoc and Vietnam's tourism sector to strengthen safety measures for marine tourism by improving weather warning systems, tightening supervision of passenger transport and standardising emergency response procedures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
Following the recent accident in the Phu Quoc Special Zone, authorities in An Giang province are stepping up oversight of tourism activities, particularly waterway tourism. The provincial Department of Tourism has proposed stricter inspections of passenger vessels serving island tours, along with more timely weather updates and warnings for visitors, particularly during the rainy season and peak travel periods.
According to Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the An Giang Department of Tourism, it is essential to expand safety training for boat crews and tour guides while ensuring visitors receive safety briefings and instructions on the use of life-saving equipment before each trip, as part of efforts to build a safer, more professional and sustainable tourism environment.
