VOV.VN - Vietnam’s overseas representative missions should evolve from traditional connectors into “strategic radar” capable of identifying emerging technologies, investment flows and market opportunities to support the country’s next phase of development, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu has said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 33rd Diplomatic Conference held recently in Hanoi, the Vietnamese ambassador to Cambodia affirmed economic diplomacy must play a more proactive role as Vietnam pursues rapid, sustainable growth and stronger national competitiveness.
According to the ambassador, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia has implemented the Government’s economic diplomacy strategy during the first half of 2026 by placing citizens, localities and businesses at the centre of its work.
The embassy has focused on helping Vietnamese companies expand into the Cambodian market, promote trade and investment, resolve business challenges, and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
One highlight was the 2026 Vietnam-Cambodia Business Dialogue, which attracted more than 200 companies from both countries. The embassy also supported hundreds of Vietnamese businesses in conducting market surveys, finding partners, participating in trade fairs and promoting their products in Cambodia.
The embassy also expanded cooperation between Vietnamese provinces and Cambodian localities through trade, investment and tourism promotion activities, while assisting delegations from Lam Dong, Tay Ninh, Gia Lai, An Giang and Dong Nai in exploring new economic partnerships.
Embassy officials maintained regular engagement with the Cambodian government, ministries, local authorities and business community to address obstacles facing bilateral cooperation projects.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Vu said the embassy would continue supporting visits by Vietnam’s provincial leaders to Cambodia, facilitate new local-level partnerships and prioritise cooperation in sectors including high-tech agriculture, food processing, information technology, digital transformation, e-commerce, logistics, renewable energy and the green economy.
The embassy would also continue providing businesses with policy updates, market intelligence and assistance in working with Cambodian authorities throughout their investment and business operations.
Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu said economic diplomacy should no longer be limited to serving as a bridge between businesses and overseas markets.
Instead, he argued that Vietnam's overseas missions should function as “strategic radar,” proactively identifying emerging technologies, new market opportunities, investment trends and advanced development models around the world to provide timely policy recommendations for authorities at home.
“Vietnam's overseas representative missions should not only facilitate trade connections but also serve as strategic radar, detecting new technologies, market opportunities, investment sources and innovative development models to support policymaking at home,” he said.
To achieve this, overseas missions need stronger research, analytical and forecasting capabilities so they can provide high-quality information to the Government, local authorities and businesses.
Economic diplomacy should also expand into new areas such as science and technology diplomacy, digital transformation, the digital economy, the green economy, cross-border logistics and infrastructure connectivity.
Another important task, he said, is building networks linking governments, businesses, universities, research institutes, investment funds and international experts to help Vietnamese localities and enterprises integrate more deeply into regional and global value chains.
As Vietnam shifts toward a development model driven by science, technology and innovation, the ambassador noted the transition from acting merely as a bridge to becoming a strategic radar reflects growing expectations for Vietnam’s overseas missions to identify new drivers of growth and turn diplomacy into a more effective resource for national development.
